Yumonsters 2.0 - Rainbow Update!! Out Now!!!

Hello everyone!  It's me, Bahamutgreen! Welcome to Yumonsters 2.0: Rainbow Update! In this post I'll go into more detail about what will be included in this small update to the game. It's nothing major, but hopefully it will help you enjoy your time with the game a little bit more! Let me open with some good news: From my testing, it seems like pets from the original release may have survived the update? I was worried (and kind of certain) this would not be the case. I'm not sure if this is true for everyone? But if it is, WOW I am so happy to see that! (Also, please excuse any major load times that might occur your first time loading up the game.)

There's a bit to cover, so let's get started. First, the fun part: the new pets!

First up is Duckarrot! A timid bird that loves flying and relaxing in water!

Then we have Hopplum! A friendly frog that can jump incredibly high! I hope purple fans enjoy having 2 purple monsters in the game!

There's a reason for that, actually. It goes along with the name "Rainbow Update." As of 2.0, there are 7 Yumonsters available, one for each color of the rainbow! Spiceodile is red, Duckarrot is orange, Pinapwhale is yellow, Kabutonion is green, Blueberodent is blue, Eggplantypus is indigo, and Hopplum is violet!

They're not in order in the game's intro, but I did add an additional page to the survey, where you can find the options for the two new pets. Enjoy spending time with them!

Now let's move onto what you can do with your pets in 2.0. First up, new pets means there's 2 new rooms to buy! Enjoy the new scenery of the Orange and Violet rooms!

You can find them on the second page of the shop, good on Jimmy P for expanding his business!

You may notice something else on the second page... That's right! Hats are now available for purchase! It's not a lot, but you can get 4 different hats for your pet to wear! I hope you enjoy customizing your pets just a little bit more. (And please understand, due to the way the hats are set up, some of them don't really look good on certain pets. But I'm sure I can fix this in a future update.)

You may be thinking, "great... but I can't actually buy any of that because the love point system sucks!" And on that note, I'm happy to reveal the final major change in Yumonsters 2.0!!

That's right, there are actual minigames when you click play with your pet! Just like before, the type of minigame is determined by your pet's mood, which can be changed with the food at the store. These minigames are not very good, but they should give some more immediate feedback to gaining love points, unlike the randomness of the previous version.

For the happy minigame, you have to find which bush your pet ran into!

The mean minigame is tug of war! Mash the select button 30 times to win!

The quiet minigame is a simple matching game, match the same color bed sheet and pillow case to win!

Lastly, the excited minigame is frisbee. Line up the frisbee and the pet!

Again, these minigames are not that great. But the randomness of gaining love points was one of the original version's biggest problems, and a lot of players told me about it. Even this update was a learning experience, so please excuse how rough some of these games look and work. (You can see some more info on what is wrong about each game at the bottom of this page lol.)

Also if you run out of love and cannot beat your minigame for whatever reason, picking "pet" or "just relax" still has a slim chance of giving you 1 love point. So you can keep trying until you can buy a new fruit. But there isn't any penalty for losing a mini game, so it's up to you.

One last thing, since it's the priciest item to buy, there is now a small end-game message when you go on vacation! But I'll let you read it on your own time!

Thank you for enjoying Yumonsters! I know it's a really small dinky little project. But I had fun seeing it come together, and I'm really happy people liked it. Genuinely, I had no intentions of updating this game. But so many people told me how much they liked it, told me their problems with it, and asked for various features. It made me really happy, so I wanted to say thanks for making such a small, quick, and silly project worth updating.

Don't expect too many updates going forward, as I still don't have much planned. And I'm currently really busy with other projects. Particularly I want to get back to seriously working hard on my other major game, Once Upon An Adventure, so it can be finished soon! However, with that said, I do have rough ideas for at least 4 more Yumonsters... So if you have any suggestions or issues with 2.0, send them my way! You never know 3.0 will be around the bend!

Have a great day, and enjoy Yumonsters 2.0!!

Full list of changes:

⦁ Changed the load screen/opening logos

⦁ Changed the main menu

⦁ Added Duckarrot and Hopplum as new pets

⦁ Added a second color page to the intro survey

⦁ Added additional shakes to the egg hatching animation

⦁ Added a second page to the shop

⦁ New pets come with new Orange and Violet rooms

⦁ 4 hats your pets can wear are available for purchase (bow, cap, sprout, spikes)

⦁ Added a small end-game message after going on a vacation

⦁ Completely reworked the love system to feature 4 new minigames instead of being random

⦁ Changed the other heart options to give love randomly if you cannot beat a minigame

Issues with each minigame:

⦁ Happy Minigame - Hide and Seek: If you pet enters bushes 2-4, the game plays as normal. But if the pet appears and then vanishes right away, the game is unwinnable. I'm sorry, I really couldn't figure out what was causing this issue. You'll have to lose the game and try again. Also, this game does NOT have a restart feature. It's the only one where restarting the mini game just did not work, so you have to be booted out of the mini game full on to restart it. No clue why.

⦁ Mean Minigame - Tug-o-War: Nothing really wrong with it from a gameplay standpoint. But the visuals mess up really badly once your clicks reach the 20 mark. It's still counting though, so don't stop clicking!

⦁ Quiet Minigame - Bed Time: I couldn't figure out how to have this game play more standard, where you get more chances and the cards flip back over once you click them. So for now it's more like a game of chance. Since you only have 2 clicks before the game ends. Also, there was a weird crash that would happen if you lost the game with a certain mismatch. It was super odd so I just full on made it impossible to get those two items at the same time. Not a pretty solution but it's better than a crash imo.

⦁ Excited Minigame - Frisbee: Not game breaking exactly, but I'm not 100% convinced the line up for the pet and frisbee works right. Sometimes it feels like you can be WAY off and still get it. But thankfully I haven't really noticed the game saying you lost on tries where you clearly hit it right. So I'll take it.

Again, this game is made super rough around the edges. I've only ever made one game before this (it's not even on Itch. But I may consider polishing it up and sharing it eventually.) So even these updates and especially these minigames are not good. Please understand. If you encounter any major issues with the game, let me know! Even if it's something you think is small / obvious, it's good to know what different people notice or are particularly bothered by in your game.

Thank you one more time for the support, everyone. Have fun!
