FLYTRAP "GAME B" UPDATE IS FINALLY HERE!!

Hello everyone! I know I'm a little over a year late now, but the FLYTRAP update is FINALLY here!!

Thank you all so much for your patience on this one! FLYTRAP ended up being surprisingly popular for a game I made in such a short amount of time. Thank you all again for your support of the project! I hope this little update shows my appreciation. I'm currently on a hiatus and I REALLY want to get back to working on games. So I felt like the long awaited FLYTRAP update was simple and clean enough to get my back into the swing of things!

It's not a MASSIVE update, but here's the patchnotes!

FLYTRAP PATCH NOTES:

  • Completely reworked how difficulty increases. Now instead of increasing game speed a set amount at specific point levels then capping after a while, the speed will continue to increase at certain point values until you lose. Meaning that the speed can increase until you have around 10 frames to catch a fly!
  • For every 5 flies you catch, the speed will increase by 1 frame until the wait is around 10 frames
  • Made it so flies won't come from the same spot twice, except for occasionally when returning after you take damage
  • Added a high score tracker! You'll lose your score if you turn the game off or change game mode,  so be sure to screenshot your scores first!
  • Added GAME B mode! This mode has 2 flies come at Marty instead of one! To change game modes, simply press 'B' or 'X' when a game is not currently active! Timing for Game B is the same as Game A, though of course it progresses MUCH quicker as you collect twice the points.
  • Reworked Touch / Mouse controls so they're actually useable now. Simply click in a direction on the screen to move Marty's head in that direction (ie. tap the top of the screen to move Marty up, bottom of the screen to move Marty down, ect ect.) While the game is off: tap the top of the screen to change to Game A, bottom of the screen to change to Game B, and the left or right sides of the screen to start the game. That's right, you can now play without a keyboard or controller! This should make it better to play on phones!

KNOWN ISSUES WITH THIS UPDATE:

  • Most issues come from Game B with some quirks I couldn't exactly fix due to the nature of the mode. In particular, flies can appear from the same place twice since there's 2 of them and I wasn't sure how to make one flies' path influence the others without making a mess of the events. But I figured it's infrequent enough to not be a HUGE problem and can sometimes lead to points + difficulty increasing quicker, leading to more exciting gameplay. At least in my opinion.
  • Phone version still isn't exactly ideal. There's no score until you game over just because of how difficult it is to have a functioning score display lol. But the biggest issue is the complete lack of sound effects. It may not sound like a big deal, but I feel the audio cues are a big part of the gameplay. But still, haven't a game you can play on phones is kinda novel, right?

----

And that's it! Again, this is a fairly small update. But it's a fairly small game. I went through the trouble of scrapping a lot of the mechanics to make them run considerably better. I redid everything for Game B like, 3 times before getting it perfect! It was a lot of work but I was able to use some neat code and scripts to make the game's difficulty progression actually... y'know... game like! It's no longer a fancy powerpoint lol. And I really hope you all like it even if it's nothing mind blowing!

So, where to go from here. What's next for Marty the Venus Flytrap? Well, I do have some small ideas for a FLYTRAP 2. Something a little prettier with more enemy types, perhaps some powerups, and more to do. Something similar to a Game & Watch Gallery Modern update for these types of games. I specifically keep thinking of a spider enemy you can't go too high or else you get hit by it. But that'll come in due time. But I do think this is the end of the line for FLYTRAP 1 unless some major issues come up with this update. I'd like to focus on updating some other games and most importantly: returning to Once Upon An Adventure! So while I'm so happy this small project got to be polished up a little bit, I think it's fair to say that I've done pretty much all I can with the concept for the time being.

Thank you all so much for your love and support of FLYTRAP! From convincing me to make it on twitter, to playing it almost 2 years later! It means the world to me and I hope you all look forward to what I work on next!
